FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH DISCOVERED IN AN "INFRARED SAUNA".

When Deb Ozarko turned 45 she thought her days as an athlete were over. Once a tri-athlete she'd already given up running due to worn-out knees, and only did "aqua-thons" - the cycling and swimming portions of a treathlon. But then her shoulder started to go as well, and swimming became impossible.

After nearly a year of traditional and alternative treatments, she gave up competitive training. Still feeling a need to sweat, detoxify and stay fit, she started to use an Infrared Sauna at a local clinic. That's when her big surprise came.

"My shoulder which was plaguing me for 10 bloody months suddenly felt better," says Ozarko who lives in the Hogsback neighbourhood of Ottawa. "I've been to acupuncturists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, Acive Release Therapists and I've had X-rays, ultrasound and an MRI. But after only three treatments in the infrared sauna it fells better than all of that combined."

Ozarko is one of many endurance athletes finding that infrared sauna therapy can do much more than detoxification through sweat. It turns out the gentle ceramic heaters penetrate in the body's soft connective tissue and make it more supple. The heat penetrating from the outside also allows more time to mobilize lactic acid and alleviate muscle cramping that occurs as a secondary problem to many sports injuries.

Other Iron Man Athletes have used the saunas to prevent injuries, but the healing side of it seems to be a new discovery. The Ottawa Senators are using an infrared sauna in the medical and physio side of the statium, in an attempt to keep players from sustaining injuries late in the season. This type of sauna has been used for years by medical doctors and naturopaths specializing in detoxification of chemicals and heavy metals, because of it's unique function of making a body sweat without raising the core body temperature.

Toronto naturopathic doctor Joan Weir now 60, was an elite athlete in her younger days. She competed internationally on the Canadian Women's National Softball Team in the 1960s, and later on the Canadian National Kayaking Team in the late 70s. "I was always pushing my body." she says. "I did many different sports and all of them at a high level. You're said to be extremely fit when yu're doing it, but as you age your body pays a much higher price for all the pushing."

Weir lives in the countryside and chops her own firewood for the winter. As she truned sixty she resigned herself to a much slower pace as each day of wood chopping required a week of rest afterward due to muscle cramping and fatique. "After about three months I noticed that I don't feel the aches and pains anymore. It's a truly marked difference. My back, neck and hops all felt the history of my sports every time I exercised, but now I feel good afterward."

PERHAPS THE SECRET FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH IS THAT FOUNTAIN OF TOXINS THAT POURS OUT OF US WHEN WE USE THE "FAR INFRARED SAUNAS".

MASSAGE THERAPY AND THE COLD & FLU SEASON

As fall rolls around, many are looking to find ways to stay healthy during the cold and flu season. One option many don't think of immediately is Massage Therapy. Massage can improve your immune system, and therefore affect how will you fight off any offending virus, in two different ways.

The first is by directly flushing your system. You can accomplish this by either having a general massage, which will help clear or flush cellular debris and general lymphatic fluid build up that has been accumulating with daily living and normal maintenance tissue repair. Your body's natural "overflow storage" space is the skin, muscle and interstirial spaces (space between cells), so it is healthy to clear this build up on a regular basis, This fulshing massage also stimulates your natural killer cells that are stored in your skin.

You can also be specific with clearing your lymphatic system, which is your immune system's main trasport and housing area, with Lymphatic Drainage. This is a very gentle and slow treatment which targets the Lymphatic vessels and nodes directly. This type of clearing improves the efficiency of how your various white blood cells can travel throughout your body. You would not be having any extensive deep tissue work with this type of treatment since that will temporarily close your lymph vessels and be counter productive.

The second way massage therapy affects your immune system is by calming your nervous system. You essentially have two nervous system responses. One is the "fight or flight", or sympathetic, response slows down blood flow and energy output to all non-essential areas to running away from danger. This includes digesting food, generating normal tissue repair, and fighting infection. The end result to too much stress is a compromised immune system, among other things.

In a perfect world, we would all benefit from receiving a full body massage once a week to restore our natural nervous system and blood chemistry function and balance. However, you will notice an improvement in your immune system with even a once a month treatment regime. The positive benefits will be present and are accumulative however often you do manage to experience this form of healing.
