MASSAGE OFFERS QUICK PAIN RELIEF FOR ADVANCE CANCER PATIENTS: STUDY
Brought to you by our own: Jackie Spencer(RMT)
Massage therapy safely helps to relieve short-term pain in patients with advanced cancer, a trial suggests. In Tuesday's, September 9th 2008 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers looked at pain and mood scores among 340 people with late stage cancer.
Participants were randomly assigned to have massage therapy by a registered massage therapist, or simple touch by someone who placed both hands on the subjects for three minutes at 10 body sites. "When patients near the end of life, the goals of medical care change from trying to cure disease to making the patient as comfortable as possible," said study author Dr. Jean Kutner, a professor in the division of general internal medicine at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine.
"This study is important because it shows massage is a safe and effective way to provide immediate relief to patients with advanced cancer." Those in the massage group showed a 1.87-point decline in pain scores compared with 0.97 points for the control group, the researchers found.
"The changes in the massage group were statistically larger than those in the simple-touch group, but all changes were small. Over time, pain, mood, quality of life, and pain medication use were the same in both groups," the journal's summary for patients said.
While massage offered immediate relief to some patients, the beneficial effects did not last for three weeks. "Massage may offer some immediate relief for patients with advanced cancer, but the absence of sustained effects demonstrates the need for more effective strategies to manage pain at the end of life," the journal's editors concluded.
Limitations of the study included that many of the participants did not attend all six of the assigned treatment sessions, and that the people measuring pain and mood knew who received which treatment, which could skew their interpretation.
It's thought that massage may help improve pain and mood through psychological effects of the therapist's attention, as well as physical or biological effects, such as decreasing inflammation, increasing circulation and release of mood-boosting endorphins.

FOOD FOR THOUGHTS
THE POWER OF GRATITUDE
I work at my husband's medical clinic and have the incredible privilege of seeing his pattients begin the healing process right in front of my eyes. My husband is a medical doctor who practices holistic medicine, advising his patients in the use of proper nutrition and supplements, and healthty lifestyle changes. He treats not just the physical body, but all aspects of a person. Illness can result from emotional, mental, or even spiritual distress.
After my husband analyzes a patient's history, rechecks the results of the physical exam, and checks the results of any tests that were performed, he writes up a program for healing.
My job is to explain he instructions and try to make them as easy to follow as I can. Initially, patients can be very anxious, frightened, and overwhelmed. A very important part of this treatment is to reduce stress as much as possible.
Joe, a Vietnam veteran, had been told by his oncologist that his cancer was terminal, and he should go home and get his affairs in order. This is his story. After explaining his nutritional program, I started to give him self-healing exercises. The first one was gratitude.
"Upon awakening," I told him, "before you open your eyes in the morning, begin to give thanks, individually, for each thing that you are grateful for in you life. This moves your attention away from what you do not want in your life and places it on what you do want. This also takes energy away from what is unwanted and places it on what is wanted. People have a tendency to dwell on the negative instead of the positive.
Joe told me emphatically, "I ain't grateful for nothing!"
I asked, "Can you see me?"
"Yes," he answered.
I asked, "can you hear me?"
Again his reponse was, "yes."
"Do you now understand how to do 'The Gratitude Exercise'?"
I looked at him intently. He nodded his head, a thoughtful expression on his face. I introduced the next exercise. "Always live in the moment. The past is gone. You may have made some terrible mistakes, but you learned from them. The future is unknown; you don't want to live there, either. You want to live in the moment.
Joe began to weep. I knew then that his healing was beginning. I reached the last exercise. "When you brush your teeth each morning and evening, look in the mirror, look in your eyes, and say, 'I love me and I forgive me.'" Joe stared at me and said, "I hate myself, and I can't forgive myself.
I could never do what you're asking me to do." Softly, I asked him, "Is it possible that this is the reason why you are sick? Maybe you just don't love yourself enough to take care of yourself." With tears rolling down his cheeks, he nodded.
When Joe returned six weeks later for his follow-up visit, he stopped by my office. "I am able to love and forgive myself," he told me. "I have a lot to be grateful for, and i'm living in the present every day." He looked very healthy and relaxed, and his smile was beautiful.
I knew then that he would be well. And he is.

CRASH DIETING REDUCES LONGEVITY
PRESENTED BY

www.custom-fitness.ca
Many women follow yo-yo diets, where they lose weight, gain it back and then lose it
again. A Scottish study on fish showed that yo-yo dieting is unhealthy and could reduce
life expectancy.
They studied the effects of binging followed by dieting on growth rate, reproduction success and life span. The life span of the fish on the yo-yo diets was 25 percent less than the fish eating normally. Yo-yo dieting did not affect growth rate or reproductive capacity. The shorter life span was due to sudden death rather than accelerated aging.
The researchers speculated that the increased incidence of sudden death was due to tissue imperfections triggered by over nutrition and accelerated tissue growth. While fish are not the same as humans, the results of the study might have implications in growing teenagers.
Yo-yo dieting in young people is unhealthy and could ultimately reduce longevity.

NEED SOME MOTIVATON TO GET YOU EXERCISING?
Here are 10 great reasons that are sure to move you (literally)!!
1. For more self confidence: when you feel more comfortable in your own skin, you gain self assurance and have a higher confidence in your abilities to surmount any obstacles that come your way.
2. For better sleep: Studies show that people who engage in moderate-intensity physical activity for 30 or 40 minutes on a regular basis, fall asleep twice as easily as their sedentary counterparts.
3. For more energy: your body absorbs and processes oxygen more easily, which releases tension from your muscles (and head).
4. For better sex: great sex depends on good overall health and high cardiovascular endurance (among other things, of course). Being comfortable with your own body also helps you feel more liberated and open with your partner.
5. For your savings: people who don’t exercise on a regular basis pay, on average, 10% more for their annual medical expenses. Tack on an additional 8% if they are obese.
6. For long life: by exercising on a regular basis, you reduce your risk of health problems and disease, thus increasing your life expectancy.
7. For friendship: by engaging in physical activity (particularly team sports) you create bonds with other people who share your interests.
8. For less stress: when you exercise, your body releases the day’s stress and tension, and allows you to clear your mind and stop thinking about your problems, if even for a little while.
9. For snack control: new studies show that exercise is your best ally in the fight against snacking. It’s simple, regular physical activity reduces stress; by reducing stress, you reduce cravings.
10. For fun: physical activity should be enjoyable, that’s the main reason to get moving.
Here are 10 slightly less great reasons:
1. To stop your arm from jiggling when you wave goodbye.
2. To pick up the sexy trainer at the gym.
3. To have an excuse to buy an iPod.
4. To look like Anna Kournikova.
5. To strut around in a bikini with pride.
6. To make your ex really sorry he dumped you.
7. To fit into your skinny jeans.
8. To look "HOT" for your new beau.
9. To buy the cute Madonna track suit at Sears.
10. To run after the bus or garbage truck without passing out.
