PREGNANT WOMEN FEEL BETTER - WITH ADAPTED MASSAGE

Massaging pregnant women has long been something massage therapists have been very careful about, and have often even avoided altogether. However, other opinions are asserting themselves. Perhaps pregnant women need massage more than other people?

That pregnancy should be a contraindication for massage is not always true. Pregnant women have considerable use for massage since it can alleviate many of the problems inherent to a pregnancy. During pregnancy the centre of gravity is gradually shifted forward which affects muscles and joints. The lumbar curvature increases and muscles in the buttocks, inside and outside of the thighs and in the lower back become more tense. The breasts enlarge and become heavier, affecting the muscles in the shoulder and neck.

In addition to the strain caused by the changes in weight come the hormonal changes which loosen the joints in the pelvis. Unfortunately, the hormones don’t only affect the pelvic joints but also all joints in the body. Being accustomed to massage is an advantage. If one has never been massaged before the body can react strongly if one suddenly starts receiving frequent massage treatments. However, for a woman who is accustomed to being massaged there is no hindrance.

Midwife Bette L. Waters has written the book “Massage During Pregnancy” in which she examines research done on massage of pregnant women. According to Waters, there is no known case where massage has led to a miscarriage. However, 10 – 15 percent of all pregnancies end in spontaneous miscarriages before the 13th week of pregnancy. It is thus natural that the anxiety over the cause of the miscarriage can lead to the conclusion that the massage was inappropriate. One way of avoiding such situations is to not massage new clients before the 13th week of pregnancy. Research supports massage during pregnancy. Studies conducted at the Touch Research Institute in Miami, Florida, have shown that massage has positive effects on pregnant women.

One study showed lower levels of stress hormones (norepinephrine/noradrenaline) in pregnant women who had received massage as well as fewer complications during labor and the time immediately following. Also, the number of premature births was reduced. Massage of pregnant women’s feet has been shown to result in an increase in foetal movements.

There are certain specific conditions where massage during pregnancy is not to be carried out:

- At the slightest sign of blood clots/thrombosis the client should be sent to a doctor.

- Lying on the back should be avoided after the 13 th week of pregnancy.

- The calves should be treated carefully, avoiding deep massage.

- If the client has previously had chronically elevated blood pressure she should not be massaged during pregnancy.

- If oedema (swelling due to retention of fluids) is present, massage is not to be given until a doctor has affirmed that blood pressure is normal.

- Obviously, all contraindications applicable to non-pregnant clients also apply to pregnant clients. Specialists are in Canada Canada is a forerunner for massage during pregnancy.

CHANGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT NATURALLY WITH AROMATHERAPY

Aromatherapy, a word which derives from ‘aroma’ meaning fragrance or smell and ‘therapy’ meaning treatment. The term 'aromatherapie" was coined by the French chemist, Rene Maurice Gattefosse in 1928. Aromatherapy, reputed to be at least 6000 years old, is based on the ancient principle that the spirit and the body should be in harmony.

This healing art combines the aromatic essence of plants, known as essential oils, with a relaxing therapeutic massage, bath, inhalation, cream or prepared compress to restore a state of well-being.

While essential oils are considered safe to use, they are very powerful, highly concentrated substances which should be treated with a great deal of respect. Always consult a professional before using any oil. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not use essential oils without consultation.

Aromatherapy creates balance of body, mind and spirit. Each essential oil has a natural, medicinal property that stimulates in a specific way, therefore certain oils are used for treating certain conditions. Here are just a few of the therapeutic oils and their effects.

- Chamomile: Soothing and harmonizing

- Clove: Warming

- Fennel: Clearing

- Eucalyptus:Balancing and stimulating

- Grapefruit: Refreshing

- Jasmine: Soothing

- Lavender: Calming and healing

- Lemon: Cleansing and stimulating

- Orange: Calming and energizing

Aromatherapy is beneficial in so many ways. It can provide a boost when you need to be alert or promote calmness during tense and stressful situations. Increasing attention and memory, it also helps to maintain focus and energy levels through a long work-day or when battling lack of sleep or jet lag.

Best of all, there is no susceptibility to the highs and lows associated with common quick fixes such as caffeine, alcohol, sugar or drug consumption.
